What is Kendo?

Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art that means "the way of the sword." It combines physical training, mental discipline, and traditional values to create a unique and rewarding practice.
Rooted in the sword-fighting techniques of samurai, kendo uses bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armor (bogu) to allow for safe, full-contact practice. Today, it is practiced by millions worldwide.
At its core, kendo is about much more than sword techniques—it's about developing your mind and spirit.
The practice teaches focus, perseverance, and respect for others, all while improving your physical fitness and agility.Training involves learning strikes, footwork, and posture through drills (kihon) and sparring matches (keiko).
You’ll aim for specific target areas: the head (men), wrists (kote), torso (do), and throat (tsuki), all executed with precision and energy.Kendo also emphasizes etiquette and tradition.
You bow to your opponent, show respect to your equipment, and strive to embody qualities like humility and sincerity. These practices connect you to centuries of samurai culture while fostering a sense of self-discipline.
